Room 1307, The Encore Suite: Meet Felix Marrow

Room 1307 · The Encore Suite · Floor XIII

“Dressed to stay for one more song.”

Felix Marrow checked in for one song. That was several songs ago.

He arrived in a striped suit cut so sharply it seemed to be tailored to a beat only he could hear, carrying exactly two things: a hatbox, and a record in a plain paper sleeve with no label at all.

The hatbox

The hatbox does not contain a hat. It contains bow ties: dozens of them, each one carved from bone, each one polished to a soft glow. Felix wears a different one every night. He says the right bow tie can change the way a person walks into a room.

He is, as far as we can tell, never wrong about this.

The record

Nobody knows what's on the record. Felix has never played it. When we asked, he tapped the sleeve and said, “You'll know it when it plays.” Then he asked if the ballroom had a good sound system, and whether we'd thought about a mirror ball.

Just one more song

Felix insists he is only staying for the last dance. The trouble is that every time the music stops, he remembers a song that everyone simply must hear before they go home. Then another. Then, inevitably, one more.

The band has stopped arguing. The band, frankly, has started requesting him.

The Encore Suite

Room 1307 was meant to be a quiet suite. It has become something else entirely: the unofficial dressing room of Floor XIII.

Nervous partygoers find their way there, the ones who aren't sure about their outfit, or about whether they should have come at all. Felix fixes a collar. Lends a bow tie. Rehearses a grand entrance with them in the hallway until they're laughing. Then he walks them to the ballroom doors and introduces them, loudly and with great enthusiasm, as if they were the guest everyone had been waiting for.

Felix believes a good jacket and an enthusiastic introduction can rescue almost any evening. So far, Floor XIII has given him no reason to doubt it.

Front desk note: Late checkout requested. Again.

What's the one song you'd beg for at the end of the night? Felix is taking requests in the comments.
